Questioning Techniques for Teachers That Work
Today class, we’re exploring questioning techniques for teachers—specifically, which methods move learning forward and which leave students struggling to stay awake or staring out the window looking for cloud animals.
Questioning is one of the best tools you have when you are teaching a class. A well-placed question can uncover a misconception, start a useful discussion, or push a student to explain an idea more carefully. A poorly chosen question can turn into a guessing game in which the same three students answer while everyone else waits them out.
The goal is not to ask more questions. It is to ask questions with a purpose and then give students enough time and support to think.
Questions become formative assessment only when the answers influence what happens next. The evidence synthesis by Black and Wiliam helped establish this distinction: eliciting student thinking matters because teachers and students can use that evidence to adjust instruction and learning. A beautifully worded question that changes nothing is still just a question.
Start With the Purpose of the Question
Before asking a question, decide what you need it to do. Are you checking whether students remember something? Trying to learn how they reached an answer? Starting a discussion? Helping them make a connection? Inviting them to develop a question of their own?
Questions can help teachers:
- spark interest in a new topic;
- recall information students will need for the next step;
- check understanding during a lesson;
- uncover errors or misconceptions;
- encourage students to compare ideas and use evidence;
- summarize or reflect on learning; and
- open a path into discussion or inquiry.
Recall questions have a place. Students sometimes need to remember a definition, multiplication fact, sequence, or key detail. Problems arise when recall is the final destination instead of the starting point.
Closed and Open Questions
Closed questions
A closed question usually has one short, expected answer: “What is the denominator?” or “Where does the story take place?” These questions are useful for checking facts, reviewing vocabulary, or seeing whether the class is ready to continue.
The limitation is that a correct answer does not always reveal understanding. A student can guess, repeat what someone else said, or remember a word without understanding the idea behind it.
Open questions
An open question allows more than one reasonable response or requires an explanation. For example:
- What evidence supports that interpretation?
- How are these two methods alike, and where do they differ?
- What might happen if this condition changed?
- Which solution is more convincing, and why?
Open questions are especially useful when you want students to reason, compare, defend, or revise ideas. They are central to teaching critical thinking, but they work best when students know that an answer still needs evidence. “There is no single answer” does not mean “anything goes.”
Use Follow-Up Questions to Get Beyond Guessing
The first answer is often only the beginning. A short follow-up can reveal much more than asking a completely new question:
- What makes you say that?
- How do you know?
- Where do you see that in the text, data, or problem?
- Can you explain your reasoning another way?
- Who can add to that idea?
- Does anyone see it differently?
- What would change your mind?
These prompts teach students that the classroom values reasoning rather than fast answers.
Here is a simplified example I have used when discussing an elementary reading story:
Teacher: What do you think about Charlotte in Charlotte’s Web?
Student: She’s very nice and she loves others.
Teacher: Why do you think that?
Student: She really cares about Wilbur.
Teacher: How do you know she cares about Wilbur?
Student: She makes webs that tell people about him. That helps him get famous and stay alive.
Teacher: What else in the story supports your description of her?
None of the follow-ups are complicated. They simply keep the student with the idea long enough to explain it. The same sequence works in science (“What evidence in the investigation supports that?”), math (“Why does that method work?”), and social studies (“Whose perspective is missing from this account?”).

Wait Time Is Part of the Question
We all know about wait time, but silence can feel much longer from the front of the room. Teachers often rescue students too quickly by rephrasing the question, adding hints, or answering it themselves.
Ask the question, pause, and look as though you expect thinking. For a demanding question, let students jot an idea before anyone answers. Classic wait-time research reviewed by Mary Budd Rowe found that deliberately lengthening the pauses after a teacher’s question and after a student’s response could change the quality and distribution of classroom talk. Treat that as a design principle, not a stopwatch rule. A factual check may need only a brief pause; a complex comparison may need writing time, partner rehearsal, visuals, or another form of processing support.
If nobody responds, do not immediately make the question easier. Try one of these:
- Give everyone another 20 seconds to write.
- Ask students to identify what the question is asking.
- Invite a partial answer or a first step.
- Let partners compare ideas before returning to the whole class.
- Ask what information would be needed to answer.
Sometimes you need to zip your lip. It may become slightly uncomfortable, but students learn that silence is thinking time—not a signal that the teacher will eventually do the work.
Check Understanding, Not Just Participation
“Does everyone understand?” is easy to answer and almost useless as evidence. A quiet room or several nodding heads cannot tell you what each student understands.
Instead, ask for a small piece of evidence from everyone:
- Write the first step and hold it up.
- Choose an answer, then explain the choice to a partner.
- Give an example and a non-example.
- Complete a one-sentence summary.
- Write one remaining question on an exit ticket.
Questions used for checking understanding and formative assessment should help you decide what to do next. If many students make the same error, pause and address it. When a student cannot answer, the next prompt is also informative. Record what the student can do independently and what becomes possible after a cue, model, visual, or partial example. That dynamic-assessment approach is more useful than treating the first silence as a fixed measure of ability.
Get Beyond the Same Few Students
Calling on the first raised hand rewards speed, not necessarily thought. It also allows most of the class to decide that answering is someone else’s job.
Useful alternatives include:
- Think, write, then share: Everyone develops an idea before volunteers speak.
- Turn and talk: Students rehearse an answer with a partner.
- Random selection after thinking time: Any student may be invited to share, but nobody is put on the spot before having time to prepare.
- Collect several answers before evaluating: Hearing different approaches keeps the first answer from ending the discussion.
- Invite students to pass temporarily: Return to them after they have heard another response.
The purpose is broader participation, not catching students who are unprepared. Predictable routines make participation feel safer.
Make Student Questions Part of the Lesson
There is no reason to make yourself the only person who can come up with questions. Student questions often lead to the most insightful discussions.
I like using sticky notes in a couple of ways. Small groups or pairs can move from station to station, read a short passage, and leave an answer or question on the wall. Sticky notes also work as exit tickets: students leave one question about the day’s topic as they head out. Those questions can become the starting point for the next class.
You do not really need sticky notes. A notebook, shared chart, or index card works just as well. The important part is making student questions visible and using at least some of them. When a question can be investigated with evidence, it may become the beginning of a manageable inquiry-based lesson.
Move From Teacher-to-Student Talk to Real Discussion
A classroom conversation is not much of a discussion if every comment travels through the teacher. Help students respond directly to one another with prompts such as:
- Build on something a classmate said.
- Ask a classmate for evidence or clarification.
- Restate an idea before disagreeing with it.
- Compare two responses already offered.
- Identify a question the group has not resolved.
A Socratic seminar gives students a more structured way to practice these habits around a shared text or problem. The daily version can be much smaller: two minutes of partner questioning, a short circle discussion, or one student-generated question at the end of a lesson.
A Simple Questioning Routine
When you want a practical place to start, try this sequence:
- Ask one clear question connected to the lesson goal.
- Give every student time to think or write.
- Collect more than one response.
- Ask for reasoning or evidence.
- Invite students to respond to one another.
- Use what you hear to decide whether to extend, clarify, or reteach.
You do not need an elaborate list of clever questions. A few dependable prompts—“How do you know?”, “What is your evidence?”, “Who can add to that?”, and “What question remains?”—can change the quality of a lesson when they are used consistently.

Well-placed questions let you dig into almost any topic. They also show students that good thinking is not simply producing an answer. It is explaining, listening, reconsidering, and sometimes asking a better question than the one you started with.
